Khashoggi’s murder followed by the mutilation and dismemberment of his body in the Turkish consulate in Istambul offered Erdogan a golden opportunity to degrade Saudi Arabia regionally and internationally. He has been running the show personally from the start and deliberately leaking the collected evidence to the loyal Turkish media drop by drop to build the case and pressure on both Saudi Arabia and US in order to maximize his gains through achieving economic, political, diplomatic and strategic concessions from them.
This sums up exactly what Erdogan has been doing since the commencement of the case. It has nothing to do with doing justice or adhering to international law and norms or Turkish sovereignty as he claims.
Just for readers’ information under international law the host country (Turkey) have full jurisdiction over consulates but not embassies. The question is why Turkey kept waiting to get a permit from Saudi Arabia to search the consulate and the consul’s residence?
What is obvious now is that serious talks and negotiations between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and US are going on about the price needed to satisfy the Turkish side to come down. This is after both Saudi Arabia and US have been informed exactly what the Turkish side has in his possession about the case. If the price is not right then we will be witnessing more of the evidence in the Turkish media as a pressure tool to extract more concessions.
